There is water exiting the cooling system....its not nearly as warm as it should be, on the pwrhead on the portside behind the silencer theres a plate like a waterjacket.....its way to hot to touch....so I shut it down....there is a plug at the base of the pwrhead....I removed the plug and water is pumped out strong.....could water not be making it up into the pwrhead but still be bypassed to the exhaust?
From the expanded view in the parts catalog it doesn't look like the water circulates thru the pwrhead...
4 bolts at the water pump to drop the lower unit with driveshaft and one piece watertube stays attached to pwrhead,to access the impeller is this correct.....Clymer is to general  LOL

Re: JW 17 ....cooling system

On the early engines, the exhaust cover was not cooled and would get hot. The cooling water is routed through the head before exiting to the exhaust. You should be seeing some spray coming from the exhaust relief ports when the engine is running. These early engines are not t-stat controlled so they are at the mercy of how good the impeller is.

Yes...you are correct in dropping the lower unit.
