Ok so i got my book for my motor in. I just bought a motor from a guy a 1970 Evinrude 60HP. when i got it i took it into water and nothing. No forward no reverse. I took it home and finally did it. I took the whole lower unit apart. to my surprise it was really simple. (except for the snap rings) I found that the clutch dog and both the forward and reverse gears were stripped where they engage. really simple fix. not much but i do have the knowledge now on how to take apart and reassemble the lower unit. The books aren't very clear on how to do everything like a chilton or a haynes but i think that i did everything right. there was no play in the shafts and i put new seals in and put some sealant compound over all the seals. i lubed up everything and pretty much cleaned the thing from head to toe.

yeah it did but it wasn't as complicated as you think. I might get a vid up in here it would be really nice. Its pretty easy to take apart. once you get the prop off there are 4 allen screws and 2 snap rings that hold the prop shaft in. its not that hard. the harest part about the whole thing is getting the snap rings out. if you live in minnesota i could come and help you some time if you would like.

How did you know the lower unit needed to be replaced i ran my 40 today and i got a low clunking noise under full power until it got worse and i towed it to the landing. Was wondering what i needed to be looking for to ensure it is the lower unit before i pull it and can you foward any advice?

well definatly not an expert but here is what happened with mine. It would go into reverse and forward out of water. once i put it into water it would go into gear in a really slow speed but after that nothing. I knew just by reading on here and some other places that when the clutch dog goes out then you wont move in water but it should enguage out of water. i had a clunking noise too. Its just that when that part goes out there is no place for the gears to catch and the clunking is actually it trying to catch but its ground down so it wont. best thing to do is to take it apart cant hurt nothing by looking into it.
