I just bought a 1991 115 and put it on an old 17 mako I bought that had no power. I purchased the motor without controls and tried using a 703 control box from a 1987 50 hp. The plug was the same but when I turn the key to the on position the 20 amp fuse blows. with the key in the off position the trim/tilt button on the motor works and does not blow the fuse. Is this being caused because its not the right control or do I have another problem. please help.

What you need is a multimeter and a little patients to conquer this one. First disconnect the battery positive terminal. Next switch the ignition to on the on position where it keeps blowing the fuse and do a continuity test on each switch wire between ground. Once you find continuity trace it back and find out which one is grounded. Good luck.

The 703 control box is different between the 1991 115 and the 1987 50. I don't know the difference but they show two different parts numbers.
