This is just completely out of curiousity, I live in PEI, Canada (Its that little island above Nova Scotia) and im just curious how hard it would be to take a trip down the eastern seaboard to a place like Florida in a 20-22ft boat. I wouldnt be like 1 mile offshore or anything, more or less staying closer to the shoreline and stopping in marinas along the way

I would think with all the gas cans you would have on board, there would be no room left for clothes, food, or you.

I think a mid 30'er would be ok but I dare not try it in anything less.

Just my opinion...

A larger boat for sure, and some charts, navigation equipment, etc. There's a LOT of water between Prince Edward Island and Florida. Sounds like you folks might enjoy a nice freshwater river cruise. We cruise down the St. Johns River in Florida every May and the river/freshwater/weather/etc. seems a lot safer. Of course you folks could jump on the Intracoastal Waterway and ride it to Florida, but it's salt water, fairly heavy traffic and you got to watch the channel markers to stay off the mud banks/oyster bars. Have fun and be careful!

Traveling outside you will get beat up especially rounding the Outer Banks. With good boating knowledge you may decide to take the Intercoastal Waterway. I would try a trip down the St Lawrence Seaway to Sorel, thru Lake Champlain, to Troy, NY,(stop at the city marina for a cold one at the brewery) and down the Hudson River first. See if you and the boat are up to it. I have made the Great Loop 8 times transporting the bossmans 65footer and it never seems to get easier. I met a guy in the lock at Troy who was paddeling his canoe from Canada to Key West. He made it. No reason you can't do the same. Recently a guy paddled his surfboard up the coast to NYC.

I'm not sure why you would only want to stay 1 mile off the beach. There are lots and lots of shoals and turbulent water that close to the beach. You would be better off 10-15 miles out. Then there are places like Diamond Shoals, off Hatteras. Even large ocean going vessels have deep respect for that area of the coast. Navigating the Shoals of NC would be interesting in a 20? boat, to say the least.

Even if you take the intercoastal water way all the way, you still have an awful lot of open water to cover. Personally, I would not do it in a 20' boat. Possible, but that's awful small boat for a journey considering all the supplies you would need to carry. Talking about cramped quarters

I hope that your old enough to know better. If you do try it make sure the Coast guard is aware so they can keep an eye open for you. Not a wise thing to do.
