I just ordered a Humminbird 100SX fish finder from BoatUS for 69.00 dollars.
Good price I see for this fish finder.
I'll use it more as a depth sounder than a fish finder as I dont fish very often.
Any reports, good or bad on this product?

Thanks,

TPD211

For the money its a decent unit, I have the same thing.

I too use it as a depth finder, very very good at this, however it never has been able to read depth above a fast idle.

Overall, after 3 years of use, its good for the money, reliable and its a great depth finder (except when moving).

Lot of people bash humminbirds.. I have one (a wide portrait).. It sometimes fogs up at night a little, but otherwize it works fine..

Install and adjust the transducer correctly by following the directions 100% and it'll read bottom just fine all the way up to the top speed of the boat.. ;)

Crab Bait, JB;

I read the post on Humminbirds here prior to my purchase. I made my decision based on what I intend to use the unit for. If I was a avid fisherman I probably would have chosen another brand. I could have bought a Si-tex 103 sounder for a hundred bucks from a friend of mine.
For 70 bucks, it will do the job I purchased it for.

Thanks for the input...

TPD211

I don't understand the Humminbird bashing either. I've owned 2, and both worked great. I love the 100SX as it shows battery voltage. Very nice feature. Anybody tried one of those new Matrix jobs?

Crab Bait, JB - TPD211 purchased the ff from a very reputable retailer that will provide a full refund, should he change his mind.

BoatsUS often tosses marine electronics out there, unadvertised, at incredible low prices for a very limited time. In such a case it is better to purchase first knowing you can return later if you decide the item is not going to meet your need after evaluating reviews/opinions.

Ya'all bash the Humminbirds, but I have to wonder how many of you really use them. I Have been using them for years and no problems with bottom lock or seeing fish arches. Works at all speeds, too. I really don't get it if it's set up properly. Maybe someone can explain why mine works and everyone elses doesn't...

I believe humminbird was bought by Zercom (sp) and they are under the Teleflex umbrella. Before you bash em you should look at the the new Matrix units..They have gotten good reviews and arent too expensive...They also have GPS options. Obviously they arent for everyone but they fit the bill for a lot of people. Im still deciding between the Matrix 37 67 and lowrance x125

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

Rick, most people don't get the chance but have you ever run a 'Bird in the same boat with a Lowrance or Garmin??????
That's when you will see the difference.
I had a 'Bird in the front of my boat, and a Garmin on the dash with both transducers on the transom. The bird reads 2ft. more than the Garmin, and yes, I've tweaked both transducers to be as close as possible to a 90deg. position.
The Garmin showed much more structure than the 'Bird, and I know the Garmin was showing me what was there because we see the same structure in the same areas with our state boat (Electro-fishing boat with a Lowrance) and the "bird" seldome gives the same picture.
I replaced the "Bird" in the nose with an eagle (by Lowrance) and it shows pretty well the same picture as the Garmin.....Just my experience.

Walleyehed – when you were running both units side-by-side, do you know if either unit interfered with the performance of the other? Where they both transducers working the same frequency?

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

walleye

I have run both the bird and an Eagle on the same boat and I still thought the bird did a better job. Can't say for the Garmin unit, but from what I hear from you guys, it may be my next one. I'm sure there are better units than the bird, but it's done well for me. I would like to try out the Garmin, as I know they put out a great product. That's why I bought the Garmin GPS. ;) BTW, I normally only use the bird for depth readings. I try to find the fish by bottom countour reading, which seems to work well. By the time I see fish arches, the fish are gone anyway. I usually fish in 30 feet or less on reservoirs.

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

18rabbit, good question.....I ran transducers on oppisite sides of transom and sometimes ran one unit, and not the other, but I can't say I noticed any difference in the display when turning the second one on.
The Eagle transducer is in the same location as the "Birds" transducer was, and I'm getting basically the same picture on both???????
Ya got me wondering now........

Rick, we must have been typing at the same time, and you hit submit first!
Anyway, I think proper set-up has more to do with trouble-free operation than anything, and it sounds like you got'er dialed in.....the average person may not be as "savy" though, and any unit may give problems if hap-hazardly installed, so I'll relieve some of the pull on the "Bird" owners... :D

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

I am a happy basher of hummingbirds and will never own one again..

The head unit is very well made, but the transducer is a piece of junk..

I have owned a Wide 100 for about 7 years now.. and the tranduser is too narrow angled to get a reading most of the time.. so if your weight distribution is different one day.. you have to get people to move about till the finder works again..

It also drops out over 5 knots no mater what..

before someone tells me that I need to adjust my placement/angle.. I've been trying that for years, its been all over my transom at every imaginable angle and not once has it given me reasonsable performance..

I will be selling it and buying a better Navman I think..

The upper end hummingbirds are probably OK, but the lower end like the wide 100 just plain suck..

worse when I emailed then about it giving full explanagtion of my problem, I got a two line reply with the url to the same instructions that were in the manual and no reply to my message back..

So, lets see, shoody low end product and lousy support.. nah,, I can't think of a reason not to buy one..

regards

Franki

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

Hehe,

Well, mine works as I expected it to, it reads depth and fades out at 15-18 mph or so.
It picks up fish well below 15 mph.

I was very careful when installing it and running the transducer line to keep it away from electrical interference. I wonder if the line is shielded or not?

Anyways, for the recreational boater and cant catch a fisherman I am, and all of 69.00 bucks, it will do as expected. :D

Re: Just ordered Humminbird 100 SX fish finder

Maybe we are just lucky, but I had a Humminbird Wide 100 mounted a 12 foot Jonboat with an 8hp, and it tracked the bottom beautifully, at all speeds up to wide open. I took that depthfinder off, sold that boat, got another boat with a 55hp Evinrude, installed that same depthfinder on it, and again, it worked beautifully all the way up to wide open.

Either we got very lucky, or this piece of equipment, while cheap, works quite well. I'm sorry you guys have had such bad luck with them, but I can't say I have. I have a Lowrance X-4 which I have yet to see a fish arch on, and I've had it for 8 years. I've tried every angle on the transducer and sat in every position in the boat, nothing. I can't wait to replace it with a Humminbird, at least those work!
