I have a 27 foot Sportcraft with a 7.4 liter in it. Over the past 6 years I have spent more time working on it then using it. This year I finally have it going, I just went down to run it for a while to burn some of the old gas (some of it is 4-5 years old) When I walked down there was smoke coming out of the exhaust...no big deal but there was also some smoke/steam coming out of the carb. When I shut the boat off I heard almost like a percolating sound coming out of the carb. Is that just the moisture burning out of the old gas in the tank. I have a brand new water separator in it. I ploan on putting new plugs and wires on it also. Any ideas guys.

I would love to pump it out. I was hoping to just burn some out and then keep adding gas to I get some good stuff in there. maybe I will have to stay up one night and syphon it out so I dont have to pull the boat out of the water. She wasnt running hot. I was watching the gauges. It was running bout average and the same with the oil pressure.

Since you have a "new" fuel/water seperator, you should spin the filter off and dump the entire contents into a glass jar. Wait to see how much water settles to the bottom. The filter can be used again, assuming that it isn't that old.

Anything that I spent 6 years getting running would never see any fuel 4-5 years old...this kind of puts you back to square one. Ethanol spiked fuel will never last half of that time, and may have introduced a great deal of water into your tank. Your filter may have been your saviour!

Smoke from the exhaust seems normal, especially if you are 'parked' and just idleing.

Look for water, and go from there!

Happy boating!

The filter is 2 weeks old. Let me add on to the question then and I am open to any and all suggestions, What is the safest way of getting the gas out since the tank is actually built into the Transom so I can't just pull the tank out?

doesn't matter how old the filter is, it takes two seconds for it to fill with water

best to pump out the fuel tank contents with a pump connected to the pick-up tube into a jerry can, then put the old gas into your kids car or your old jalopy or do whatever with it
