Went out fishing for sand bass for a few hours yesterday morning in a light rain at Richland Chambers Reservoir near Corsicana. Caught a whole bunch of dinks up to 12 inches, and brought home 10 larger ones, including one 18 1/2 inch monster that pushed 3 1/4 pounds on my scale. Sandies don't often get that big; the lake record is 3.9 & state record is just over 5 lbs.

Sure is nice to hear the drag sing every once in a while when you're not expecting it.

jtw

White bass, Morone chrysops, also known as sand bass, native to the the central US west of the Appalachians, including the Great Lakes, as well as river systems in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. In Texas the species is native to the Red River drainage. [Texas Parks & Wildlife]

Here's a picture of my fish:

If you're not familiar with the hybrid white/striped bass, you might find this interesting: hybrids

Looks like a hybrid to me. Nice fish anyway whatever it may be.

Re: Just missed the lake record

I had identified it as a white, but I'm having second thoughts. It had a single tooth patch on the tongue, but 2 sharp points on the gill plate. A couple of lines up on her back were uneven, but the lines on the belly were straight and incomplete. I always thought the lines on a hybrid's belly were like this: ---____----____. Plus which, an 18 inch hybrid should weigh at least 6 pounds (or so I thought).

When I was filleting yesterday's catch, I paid more attention to the details: some of them had the uneven stripes on their back, none had more than one point on the gill plate, and a couple had no stripes down in the white part at all.

The conventional science on hybrid's is that they don't reproduce, but there's been a lot of discussion on my local fishing board about hybrids spawning with the sandies. We could end up with some kind of frankenstein fish!
