Hey,

I got my first boat a few weeks ago and itchin' to get out on the water.

Cant get the outboard started; 1974 Mercury 402, 40hp

So far i've checked the compression 142 on each cylinder replaced one of the coils and installed new wiring from the switchbox to the coils.

Removed, inspected and cleaned carb, Checked the fuel pump

Checked both plugs for spark and is ok (using the correct perma-gap plugs)

The plugs are wet when I remove them.

Please help been waiting so long for the first spin in the boat!

You're sure it's getting fuel? You say the plugs are wet, but have you squirted any fuel mix into the cylinders? You only need three things for the motor to fire, spark, fuel and air. What about the timing?

Did you check the kill switch?

edit:

Never mind. You have spark. It's not the kill switch.

Have not checked the timing yet, (timing adjustment is something new to me) do I not need to have her running to adjust the timing?

When you say squirt fuel mix into the cylinders do you mean open throttle fully and squirt in there or remove the plugs and squirt in at that end.

thanks

Either way works but it is much easier to use a spray bottle and spray into the carb throat. If the plugs are wet you are NOT getting spark or not getting a hot enough spark. Even if the timing was off a bit the engine should at least try to fire. Don't mess with that unless you know what you are doing.
