I just got back from my annual 2 week fishing vacation. I caught a bunch of Bluegill and had a couple meals and one in the freezer. I spoke to a few people there and they were only getting small bluegills, I guess I must be starting to know the lake at least for bluegills because mine were good sized. I did not get to go bass fishing this year because we had to leave early due to a death in the family.

There were a few exciting things that happened. The first was taking a 9 and 11 year old out fishing. Neither goes fishing very often and I was nervous about having both of them in the boat, but it was awesome. We caught fish, I got some video, they didn't come close to hooking each other and we all had a great time.

Another thing was cleaning the biggest bluegill I ever saw up in Wisconsin. I know people have caught bigger, but the 9 year old showed up with a 10" 1 lb. bluegill. It was from a private stocked lake, but it was sure cool. My biggest catch was 9" and 3/4 lb. this year.

The last thing was hooking into something big with ultra, ultra light tackle. I think it was a snapping turtle, but could have been big bass that wrapped the anchor line. Either way, what a fight, I kept pulling it up as much as I could then it would run. Finally, it either sat on the bottom if it was a turtle, or it wound around the anchor rope. I finally could not move it at all and the line snapped, but there was a lot of excitement for the 5 to 10 minutes of fighting.

Howdy Scoop. I always love some big gill action, but haven't been too lucky with them this year.

Glad you had a good time, sorry it was pre-empted.

Where about were you? Don't want to know EXACTLY where you were, just the general area. So I won't be raiding your fishin hole.

Re: Just got back

Thanks Roscoe.

Not likely you could raid this fishing hole. I was on Sunday lake 8 miles West of Minocqua. No real public access unless you can carry your boat down a steep embankment. My home page has a couple pictures of the lake.

I really need to find where the bigger Bluegills are on the lakes around here. I have not had much of a chance to go around here. My favorite table fair

I used to fish Shishabagama and Gunlock lakes, would stay at the old Chicago Gun Club Lodge, THe Back Bay Inn. Now its all condos. :(

How do like all the developement in the area?
Was it crowded/busy in the Minocqua area?
I was up there last year and the place was like a ghost town. Everything except Paul Bunyan's.
Dang, Now I got the itch for a giant cookie.

Roscoe, Shishabagama used to be connected to Sunday lake. When they made inprovements to Hwy 70, they cut them off (Ok, this was way before my time). The development bites. Between 1985 when I first went up there with my friend and now, it is just unbelievable. It is sad. When we went up on Saturday, it was like a ghost town, although we heard it was one of the busiest shopping days this year earlier in the day, it did get busy on Monday though. I wouldn't mind so much if the visitors weren't so uppity and snotty. Those cookies and doughnuts at Bunyan's are awesome, that's why I don't go there much. We also try to stay out of town a lot, but do drive down and go to Jacoby's in Hazelhurst once a year.

The Bearskin trail is an great place to bike and if you like trout fishing, it is the only way to get back into the good areas of Rocky Run creek.

I have been to the back bay inn when they had a restaurant, but have not been back there since it closed.
