just got a 1968 Evinrude "Triumph" model #55873S serial # C573136 questions

I was wondering if anyone can help me out with a couple things first off motor runs good on muffs but when I put it in the water I have no reverse it goes into gear but it makes a clicking sound and doesn't do anything and I got to rev the motor up to put into forward. I don't understand what is going on??? Do I need new gears in the lower end?? Also does anyone know the correct hight the transom need's to be for this motor?? Thanks for any help

What is the condition of the lower unit oil?
Does it have the proper oil in it? It takes a special oil for electric shift lower units.
You have two electric wires going down to the lower unit, 1 blue and 1 green, those are the shift wires for the lower unit.
The lower unit uses solenoids to shift gears. The lower unit is in forward until the engine starts and then it shifts into neutral.
With no voltage to either wire it is in forward. With voltage to the green wire you have neutral. With voltage to the green and blue wire you have reverse.
Measure the distance from the transom clamp to the cavation plate and then measure your transom, do they match?

You might have a sticky plunger in the oil pump or else the screen in front of it is clogged.
