Could the starter burn out the windings of the ignition coil under the fly wheel if it didn't disengage the fly wheel after starting and running engine for approx 20 minutes?. Engine is a 79 Mercury Blueband.-thanks

I wouldnt think so.
Why?
Im going to jump to a conclusion. You changed your key switch and motor wont run. No spark.
??

Re: just curious ?

hi spike thanks for your answer but thats not quite what happened ,its a friends boat and after running normally it just quit in a puff of smoke . well after looking for the cause all we could find was the starter still in mesh with the flywheel, the story is the engine is all fixed up and running good thanks to a mechanic and some rewinding of the stator ,question is can the starter act as a dynamo in this situation and cook the wiring .

Re: just curious ?

Don’t hold me to this, but I think if a starter is stuck in the up position while the motor is running, and it is turning in the right direction it could act as an un-regulated generator and send way too much power to the battery.. I think this could fry just about anything in the electrical system. But I think it would have to turn in reverse?

Solenoid would have open contacts to stop it for back charging.

Re: just curious ?

Interesting topic.....

The starter (especially permanent magnet type) can definately act as a generator. It would generate in the same direction as normal rotation as well as reverse.

Doubt if this happened in your case. If the starter did stay engaged to the flywheel, the armature would turn approx 10X the flywheel speed. This means at 5000rpm, the starter armature would travel at 50,000rpm. There is no way it could survive that for long.

Is the starter still useable?

yes so far so good... engine and starter working fine, just trying to work out why one minute everything's running ok and the next the wiring burns out, just one of those things i guess.

Don't forget about the starter bendix. When the flywheel begins to turn faster then the starter the bendix will free wheel. Thus de-energizing the starter the armature could come to rest with the bendix gear spining on the flywheel. I think?

boady
If the coil you are referring to, is the charging system stator, then you'd better check the rectifier for shorts. That would cause a burnt stator and/or burnt wires to it.

kleeds
The starter drive has no over-running clutch. Its an inertia type drive. It spins out of mesh when the the engine attempts to overspeed the armature.
