Does anyone know where I could get a set of piston rings for a 29' Seahorse J25. Just broke one reinstalling after cleaning the carbon out of the ring grove. I thought things were going to well.... Do you guys think I will have to get a set made? This motor shares the same bore and stroke with several other motors. What are the odds that someone will have rings for a J-25,J-65,A,A-25,A-35 or A-45 motor of that vintage?

Thanks in advance.

C.

Re: Just broke a piston ring....

take a good ring, that you haven't broken yet, to a good engine parts supplier. They have a tool that measures width, diamater, and thickness. They should also be able to find a brand new ring that will fit your needs. I had to do this for my engine, and had no trouble at all. The shop I went to had thousands of different sized rings, to suit anything. The cost wasn't to bad either, au$40.00 each. Considering the dealers here in Australia won't help me "because it's too old" and the cost of importing them myself.... I was happy with the result.
The only thing I had to do was grind the notch into the ends to locate the ring on the pin in the ring groove of the piston.

Re: Just broke a piston ring....

Thanks Lark2004. I'll do that.

Have you ever changed a plug wire on those old motors. Mine is in great shape considering that it is 74 years old but I would like to change it to one with a rubber boot so I don't shock myself anymore. The plug wire is soldered into the coil and I am afraid that I might fry the coil trying to unsolder the old an resolder the new wire.

I guess I could slip a boot over the wire. I just thought that it's pretty old and that it would'nt last much longer.

Thanks for the link Paul.

I don't know with that, it's way beyond my years.

I know that I would be able to change the wire, but my job is soldering electronics.

I would try and slide a boot over it I guess, don't forget to lube it up with some wd-40 or similar first.
