So I just picked up this boat and it came with a 55 johnson which runs well. I had it out over the weekend and I am pleased to say that this boat fits my needs perfectly. It also came with a vinyl top which snaps to the windshield and has all the button on panels to make a fully enclosed mooring cover.

But.... Don't we always want more?

I just so happen to have a 1987 70hp johnson t/t which is in tip top shape. We all know where this is going... So, in a few weeks when I get some time I will be rigging the starcraft with my 70hp. The problem I foresee is that I only have a 15p prop for my 70hp. I don't think this will be enough prop, I suspect I will be hitting 5500rpm way before full throttle.

I am sure some of you out there have 70hp johnson's on your 16' SS, what pitch prop are you running and how do you like it?

I would usually be patient and rig the motor and tach. and then figure out what prop I want. But Iboats has an unbelievable sale on the solas amita 17pitch w/free shipping! I suspect this prop will be a good match for a 70hp on this old starcraft.

Try before you buy?? Most shops will not take a returned Prop. I would try a 21 pitch if you want speed or a 19 for more pull. But thats on my 22 Holiday. and it seems I read the same for the smaller boats.

Sorry I think you may have misunderstood my question.

I am wondering what prop most 16' SS owners run who have 70hp johnson/evinrudes. If several people respond saying they have a 17p prop and like it, then I would take advantage of the great deal iboats has on 17p props for this motor(I suspect the 30% off sale + free shipping will end before I get a chance to rig my 70hp on my starcraft w/tach do a wide open run w/15p prop record rpm then figure out pitch based on observed rpm) .

Am I to understand that you have a 70hp johnson/evinrude on your 22' holiday and are running a 19 or 21 pitch prop?

Thanks in advance, 21p prop seems like a lot for 16' ss w/70hp what kind of top speed?

NO NO I was refering to what I think I read about 16-18 ft Starcrafts and useing a 17-21 inch pitch props, not necessarly 70 hp J/E. My 22 has a healthy 200- 1978 Johnson-- Will run 50 on calm water but usually only run 25 or a bit more. I have a 16 S/S and it has a 50 Johnson that runs well but has some mounting issues. Evert thing on the exterior was rusted solid, had to remove it with a saws all. However motor runs fine. I looked and it has a 17 pitch prop. PO said it was fast. LOL the condition of the boat I bought could not have been fast, on a good day. Lots of structure repairs and a complete tear down in progress. All the wood was like a wet newspaper.
