hey, so i have a new to me 98 Johnson 115. For whatever reason previous owner had disabled vro pump.(not sure why) all he knew was he premixed fuel for past several yrs.. So basically i have no clue what i'm looking at here. The oil line that runs out the splashwell area is plugged before it enters the motor. Just inside the motor, there is about 2" of oil line thats just cut off and ends. Where do i go from here? ive searched and found posts about disabling vro, but i dont know what i'm looking at here and need some instruction. much appreciated!

You cannot just hook it back up, because there is no VRO pump there.
If it is a 98 model, then someone has changed the fuel pump out to a completely different pump, a pump that was used on much older models.

To revert back to the VRO system, you will have to buy the pump itself...about 400 bucks...

I would leave it. Keep pre-mixing 50 to 1 ratio. Don't forget to add the oil!!!! You will be better off.

X2 and if you don't have the oil reservoir assembly it will be even more expensive.

thanks guys..i do have the oil reservoir. imo the vro is nice to have, but i cant justify the $400 pump either. i just read the label on the bracket and it is actually a '96. Boat is a '98 so it must have been repowered at one point. You say the fuel pump in my picture is used on much older motors? should i swap it out for a new pump even though it runs fine or leave it?

I wouldn't swap out anything that's currently working and not showing signs of failure. If you're not careful, you'll catch the "Emoney Disease" where everything you touch starts to break and then you'll be kicking your own behind. Get a "pre-mix bottle" and add oil to the gas and be a happy camper.

The OMS pump would have been located on the starboard side of the front of the motor, under the airbox. It is hard to tell but the pump in your picture looks to be port side. Can you remove the airbox and take a picture of the front of the motor?

Maxum, That looks to be a 90*V4 motor. It is quite different than my 60* motor, so I cannot assist further, sorry. Thanks for the picture.

Re: Just bought '98 Johnson and want to reconnect vro pump. pic

I just installed a new VRO on my 1996. Works great but cost a fortune, over $500.

With engines smaller than 175, I'm told you can go to a manual pump.

The VRO pump is easy to set up, but I'm inclined to trust the guys here who tell you that if it's not broke, don't fix it.

The VRO has four inlets, outlets. Fuel in, fuel out, oil in and oil out. If you decide to reinstall the VRO I can send you the instructions that came with my new pump. Very easy. But if yours has been converted, I wouldn't go back unless you knew your "no oil" alarm works and that no other problem exists.

Huh? The no oil alarm comes from the VRO/OMS pump itself. He has no VRO/OMS pump. He has the old style "house shaped" pulse pump that absolutely requires oil to be mixed with the gas. Pre-mix.

The "no-oil" alarm is now out of the picture.

EDIT....OH I re-read it. Had to study what you were trying to say.....

Maxum, I run Wallyworld TCW-III oil, as it is the cheapest.

Chris, do you know if i can premix xd-50 semi synthetic oil? i bought it recently but cant return it. the bottle says nothing about premixing. called the marina and they said its ok to mix. would like another opinion though. not worth risking damage.
ive used it in my previous "injected" motor and it was great. cut down on smoke and smell and even seemed to idle a little smoother..

If you have used it on a non-DI motor, it can be used for premix, I would think. What does the BRP web site say?
