How goes it? I've been digging into planning a vacation for the last week of July and cant seem to figure out where to go and figured you all could give some good ideas. I'm in Eastern NC and would like to limit it to max 8 hours of drive time. Myrtle sounds good but I'd like to avoid the rather large crowd, plus I'm more of the pitch a tent near the water type. Doesn't matter if I take the boat or not, would be a plus though. I got two daughters 8 and 4 along with my wife of course, and family coming from Ohio to meet us.

Any ideas you all have been recently? My brothers' family and mine can rough it, but Mom and Dad have passed to a more "civilized" lifestyle and prefer the cabin cottage thing.

Where in Eastern NC are you? Outer Banks is always a good idea. You can go camping or stay in a hotel. You can go past Morehead City to the end of 70 and catch a ferry or head North to Elizabeth City and go out to the Wright Brothers museum.

To the north of you: Virginia. The historic triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown is fantastic. Your girls would get a real charge out of Williamsburg. But even the areas surrounding - Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chincoteague - are well worth a visit. We've been over there 4 times and really haven't done anywhere near all of it yet.

To the west of you, Tennessee has some great lakes to vacation on (Dale Hollow Lake is one), and the Smokey Mountains are beautiful. Gatlinburg can be a little tourist-y, but we enjoy it quite a bit. Sevierville and Pigeon Forge have all kinds of stuff to fit your fancy.

I'm stationed at Cherry Point. We're out at Moorehead quite often. They love hitting the sandbags on the ICW out in Swansboro and Emerald Isle. We did Nags head last Summer it was fun, would just like a change of scenery this year.

I'm betting this would be a good place to be on July 4th.

I can give my son a call, he lives up in the north part of the state, him and his wife love running around and finding new places to explore, he might have some ideas for you!

MT; I'd be open to any ideas at this point my wife is tired of hearing "new ideas" and is wishing I'd just pick a spot.

For camping and water sports try Lake Norman near Charlotte or Lake Gaston, North of Raleigh on the NC/VA line.
