Jumpstarting Microchip-equipped engines

I'm told that it's not so much jumpstarting that damages the electronics, but rather current surge and loose Batt. connection(s). That makes sense. If the connections are clean and tight, is the danger then eliminated? After all, cars all have microchips nowadays. [I bought one of these jump start portable units to have on board for emergency, until I can afford to install a 2-battery system the proper way].
