If I trim my engine up and put it in reverse it jumps in and out. If the trim is all the way down it works just fine.

Re: Jumps out of reverse

also the engine was rebuilt last fall. I have had this problem since the rebuild. I have set the shifter shaft length myself 2 weeks ago. Have adjusted cable. Both procedures I got from reading in this forum.

Re: Jumps out of reverse

Sounds like its possible that , when trimming .

The angle of the motor is somehow, putting the shift cable , rod, linkage, something in a bind.

Then when lowered its not.

Thats what I'd check first .

Seems if it was a problem in the gearcase , motor trim / angle, wouldn't make any difference.

ie: a worn clutch dog , is a worn clutch dog, whether trimmed up / down.

Though, I've never encountered your symtoms.

Maybe someone that has will respond.

disconnect the cable at the motor and manually shift it in reverse, and try it. that will tell if it is cable or the engine.

Re: Jumps out of reverse

I inspected the linkage ang noticed a lot of play in the shift leaver. Took it apart and notice there was only a plastic bushing on one end of the leaver, so I went to a local garage and got a brass bushing from a starter, made a cut and took out about 1/16 of an inch so it would fit in the housing and seemed to take some if not all of the play out. Ordered new cables should be in 2morrow. Going out today to test .
