Jumping Out of Gear...

I have a 1975 Chrysler 55 HP. The motor runs great. However at times and not all the time, when running 1/2 to full throttle, it seems to jump out of gear for a second and then will pop back in. It feels like you hit someting in the water. Sometimes it will run for quite a while then all of a sudden jump out of gear for a second. Any ideas???

Re: Jumping Out of Gear...

I don't know much about Chrysler outboards but I used to have an old OMC V4 that did that because the rubber motor mounts were broken. I replaced the dog clutch twice [and 'doctored' it up a couple times]before figuring that out. When the motor was under load it would rock in the outer housing and pull out of gear. Reverse would push it farther in gear. Most likely the cause for mine was unknowingly waterskiing over a submerged roadbed. I thought it was odd for the motor to kick in the air 100 yds. from shore!

Cut n' Jump had a suggestion on a possible problem. Check the LU lube for water and shavings. It could well be that your clutch dog is shot. You'll have to get inside the gearcase to find out for sure, and even then it can be hard to detect visually. Replacement of the clutch and gear is the cure.

Are you hearing it pop in and out of gear? Or are you just guessing that it is?

Your prop might be ventilating when you are running at high speeds. Is you engine mounted at the correct height?

Ziggy
does that that prop have a rubber mounted hub insert? If so....it may be slipping.
