hi guys my cousin has a 1973 20hp johnson we went out today and while throttling up the motor would jump out of gear my cousin said the gear selector is adjustable once adjusted it will go into forward and stay there but while in reverse u need to hold the gear lever in the reverse position or it will pop out how can we fix this problem?

i was out in the middle of the lake when this happen so i had to tie a small piece of rope from the gear lever to my wrist i know bad move if the motor goes overboard but it was the only way back and to keep the motor in gear

Often the problem is that the connector between the two sections of shift rod has been replaced incorrectly. The screw must be completely removed in order to properly grasp the rod. Click the thumbnail.

If it's not the shift rod out of adjustment, you have a worn clutch dog/gear. Usually it is the forward gear which gives you problems, not reverse. I'd suspect the lower shift rod is pushed too far up into the coupler. This would keep it from completely engaging in reverse.

Re: jumping out of gear while moving

If you can correct the problem after adjusting the shifter, then you're okay, but if it jumps out of the other gear after making adjustments, then it's likely the shift cradle is a bit too worn. Any more than .003 on the gap, in the shift cradle and clutch dog, then things get real sloppy.

Then again, you could have adjusted it too hard to the new position and may need to back it off a tiny bit. There isn't much leeway in those adjustments, so be careful. You can also check and see how centered your adjust ment is, by slowly moving the shift left back and forth, while turning the prop and see exactly where each gear disengages. If it likes to engage in forward gear, while the shifter is in the neutral position, then you'll know that it is adjusted too far into the forward gear position.

If i's a new problem, it could be the shift cradle is worn or the clutch dog is bad.
If it''s a problem that arose after some service work, retrace your steps.
As suggested- shift coupler not in properly or shift rod out of adjustment.
These are good motors- I have 2 of them. Allways looking for parts motors.

The clutch dog can be reversed, to where the good side is working with the forward gear, but if ithe shift cradle is sloppy, then all bets are off. These set ups are made to be adjusted, but there is a fine line between being off, or being on.

Had a 9.9 with this problem, used a matchbook to hold it in gear, ended up wrecking the gears so you want to fix this soon, I would vote on a worn clutch dog.

Re: jumping out of gear while moving

Ive got a 35hp 1978 mod and had the same problem as your describing.Do what EZEKE said and check the shift road connector,be very careful in what you do, and do not overtighten those bolts, just take it easy.If all else fails, you most likely have a bad clutch dog.........CHEERS.

That's exactly the same part - one number supersedes the other. See the parts catalog for your specific motor here: http://shop.evinrude.com/

The easiest way to fill a small gearcase is with the squeeze tubes, filling from the bottom until it overflows out the top vent. That gets rid of trapped air and keeps from overfilling. If you overfill you can blow out the seals when it heats up.
