Jumped the gun with a Tach purchase

Hello All

So, thinking ahead to when I finish rebuilding the deck and transom on my 15' Chapparral with the 1972 50 HP Evinrude, I wanted to add a couple of gauges for my peace of mind. I looked high and low for a spec on the tach that this motor would take, and the overwhelming information I saw was that any 12-pole tachometer would do. I've gone ahead and purchased one, and then I see the lone post by none other than F_R the Supreme Mariner himself, answering this same question for someone else asking about the proper tach for a Johnson 50 ESL of the same vintage, where he says its a 5 pulse/10-pole tach. Can anyone confirm if I just wasted $33 on a 12-pole tach for this motor? Thanks so much!

I really never understood the pole thing, however....... that engine requires a tachometer that operates off of a six (6) pulse charging system which usually has a dial on the back of the tach that needs to be set to number 6.

Joe is correct. I just looked it up. According to my latest information, the 5 pulse (10 pole) tach is used on 9.9,15,25,&35hp 1977-up, and the 55&60hp 1978-up. Others, including your 1972 takes a 6 pulse (12 pole) tach. Most of them have a selector switch on the back nowadays anyway.

We all understand "pulses". I don't know why some wise guy had to go and confuse it by specifying "poles"

Thank you both so much for your replies. While most tachs are adjustable with a dial, this particular one I purchased is an "economy" model, which is only 12-pole/6 pulse. For the price ($33 shipped brand new) I couldn't expect too much :)

Thanks again

Glad that worked out for you. Before anybody else gets confused by my replies, note that I said "my latest information". That is not saying "latest information available". Always check to be sure for your particular application.
