Ok, next stupid question,

The gearcase I have does not have neutral. Is it posible to fit one that does?

If not, what are these things like when you start them up?

In 81' they came out with a 4hp with a neutral. Had a spring clutch. But then you would need the whole midsection and I ain't real sure as the power head would bolt up to it. Very different.

When you start one of the "in gear always" engines....just be ready to go. As these small engines didn't produce a whole lot of thrust, it's not all that bad.

Like OBJ said in the first paragraph(I'll take his word on that) and I run a 4 hp Johnson on my canoe with a bracket to act as a stern. I'll start it up at the dock and warm it up with the nose of the canoe up against the shore. When it's warmed up, I just lower the idle down and spin the tiller(motor)around and back away from the dock. Now I've been canoeing with motors for 30 years, so just practice in the open water first.

I'm coming in late on this post, so I don't have much clue what year talking about, but I can guess. I have a '52 3hp Johnny, that at startup, high idle, tied to the dock with simple rope, will not tear out the cleats. And the fun factor involved in turning it sideways on a 12 Aluminum Rowboat, and cranking it open and doing donuts is tops, and then you ARE entrainment for the land bound! And once you go transless, you will never want to back to shifting! The simple things if life give you more time for life.
