Johnson225 1992 fuel problem

I recently have been experiencing a problem with getting full rpm at WOT. The rpm rises to 4600-4700 and even though I have 1/4"-1/2" remaining throttle travel on the controls,as I increase throttle position, I get no increase in rpm. There is no change in sound, or bogging down, it just does not increase in rpm. No change in sound of the motor, etc. a couple of weeks ago the wot was 5500. Nothing on the boat has changed, prop etc.
I am wondering if I have a fuel filter clogged or something like this.
The prop is the same, bottom of the boat is clean, the load is the same (myself, (2) 1/2 tanks of fuel, etc.)

Is it possible to just get a 5 gallon plastic tank and drop a 3/8" fuel line in and connect it directly to where the fuel filter is on the engine? I am thinking this would eliminate any upstream issues, ie: fuel/water seperator, fuel tank switch, hoses, etc.
Thanks in advance for any help

You are correct. That would be a reasonable thing to try but the fuel restriction alarm should have been sounding if any of those things were at fault. Using a complete different supply will double check that.

There are a couple of things to glance at first. Does the motor idle the same as it always has? Pull the plugs and just look at them. They should all look the same. Most likely black and oily. While you have them out it's real easy (and a good idea) to take compression. Also look at the top of the air box at the throttle linkage where the cam follower is (small rubber roller that moves as the throttle is advanced). There will be a line on the flat part that you can see without removing anything. Put your control all the way to wide open (motor not running of course) and that line should be running almost straight front to back. If it's off slightly don't worry about it. What you are looking for is making sure it travels almost 90 degrees from idle to WOT.

Is it possible there may be some water trapped in the boat somewhere? Just a thought. Let us know how you make out.

Good luck!
