I have a 1980 35hp Johnson outboard that has a black sludge ouzing out of the drain hole above the water pump intake.I have noticed this each time I take my boat from the water. I dismantled the lower unit last fall thinking to find a lower unit seal leaking up into the water pump. I found the seals to be leak free. While I had it tore down I replaced the water pump. I still have the same problem. It has a burnt fuel smell to it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Don

Welcome Don!

What you are seeing is unburned fuel/oil mix from the exhaust. It will happen. If it's really heavy, some things you can do to lessen the mess are, check and make sure the engine temp is good, ignition system is functioning properly....ie...good hot spark, fuel/oil mix is not to rich, spark plugs are good.

You can also help out with a good decarb. This will help get rid of any excess oil laying about in the engine as well as help keep the rings free from carbon.

In additon to what OBJ said, the thermostat may not be allowing the engine to get up to temp.
