Johnson with a hiccup

First, let me begin by saying that this forum is fantastic. I was searching the net for some info on a mechanical fix and ran across your forum and had it fixed in no time based on the posts that were already there. This site is a real wealth of information and I had to join myself. Thanks again for all you offer. The problem I am having with my 2001 Johnson 200HP Ocean Pro is she "burps" every 5- 10 seconds while idling and most of the time will stall. Doesn't matter if it is a cold or warm idle, it still does it. This is a new problem for me on a boat I have had for a little over two years. The engine has always run great up until this point. I have fresh fuel (2 months old) in the tank with Startron added at fill up. I have noticed that it seems to take longer to pump the fuel bulb so it makes me think I could possibly have an air leak somewhere in the line. It runs great at throttle. I have read several posts about this being a "running lean" issue or fuel line issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated as I would like to try & tackle this myself before taking to the shop.

Re: Johnson with a hiccup

Very possible it is just one carb with a lean idle condition
Pull your cover off the carbs and run the engine at idle
Use a shop towel to cover each card as this will richen up that cylinder
If this stops your lean "sneeze" then you can work from there
If not then work backwards to the pump and lines for leaks

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I am going to give that a try this weekend and will post the results.

Re: Johnson with a hiccup

Think I may have fixed my problem (hopefully). I found I was missing a fuel hose clamp at the primer bulb and the hose had worked its way down and wasn't fully cinched on the bulb. I also tracked down a crack in one of the fuel lines at the carbs. I tightened up all loose ends and covered the fuel line crack while running and the hiccup seemed to stop. It did bog and stall a couple of times so I primed the bulb several times while running. As for now, it seems to be alright. I am going to replace the bad fuel line and try her again after she is all buttoned up. Thanks to those who responded.
