A quicky question before I call IBoats...

I bought a water pump kit for my 1978 85 HP from IBoats. The parts finder said it took a 18-3393.

On the plastic part of the water pump was different than what was on mine. Mine has a seal on the top and the one I got did not have a place for the seal. Everything else was perfect match.

Now that I I put the lower end back on and connected the muffs... The pump works fine except that I have water coming out around the cavitation plate where the lower end bolts on.

Is this a problem or gonna be problem??? Do I need to put the old one back on?

I know that with my Merc, no seal was needed, but this is my first Johnson.

Thanks as always...

Re: Johnson water pump

Having water coming out in that area is common when using muffs Stumpy. Nothing to worry about.

I figured that using the muffs is putting a lot of pressure where it is not suppose to be.

Man, I'm glad i do not have to take that back off... :) :)

Re: Johnson water pump

I have heard water pumps are a big problem with these older engines. I pulled the sparks out; they look ok, but have some oil on them. Is that normal for these?

Re: Johnson water pump

I don't think the water pumps on these engines are any more troubling than others PCM. Although if I bought a used one, I would spend the extra money and put a pump kit in with housing.

Wet plugs are OK.
