Hi!

I have serious problems with my 1987 150hp johnson engine. The motor starts but it doesnt run any smooth, it backfires and stuff and when i try to increase the throttle to move faster it dies, like when the ignition is wrong on a car. I have checked every thing, the gas for water, and cleaned the carburator, so i leaved my motor to a repair shop and they say that the compression is verygood on every cylinder and that i have fire on the plugs, but they also say that the fire coms at the right time on 3cylinders and 30 degrees to early/late on the other 3cyl, and they thinks its either the stator under the flywheel or the other thing under there, that i dont know the english word for but its plastic and the flywheels center runs in middle of it, like a sensor or something, with cables comíng out of it. the arm from the gas is pulling this back and forward, Does anyone have any idea then iam glad, becouse these two parts costs in sweden 450$ each so if i guess wrong thats 900$ and i cant afford it. / Andreas

Hello, Andreas.

If you think about it, a 6 cylinder engine's firing is one each 60 degrees, with opposite cylinders 180 degrees apart.

I suspect that your plugs are being fired for a different cylinder than they are in.

A careful comparison with a factory manual to guide should reveal incorrect wiring to the spark plugs.

It is possible that the stator or trigger is at fault, but I would confirm the wiring first.

Good luck. :)
