I have a johnso v4 85 hp and while it runs great, it isn't near enough motor of my 21' sunbird oddessy. The boat is 2400 lb dry. I was checking for some hop up parts since I can't afford a larger motor but I have had to boat mechanics tell me the block pistons and heads are the same from the 85-140 hp all that is different is jets and lower end gearing. How can this be and am I still better looking for a trade then re-jetting? I'm confused!

The 90-115 had the same bore and stroke, plus alot of other things.

The 85 was a slightly smaller bore.

You'll be better off looking for something else.

You'd be better off just finding a bigger motor. It costs a lot more to up the horsepower on a motor then to just find one already at the horsepower you want. I always tell my customers that want to go faster that it's about a thousand dollars per mile an hour.

Guess that only makes sense, I would like to get it too about 38-40 mph and it does about 31 now. Guess I need to sell my little 85 and find something bigger. Thanks guys for the help. :)

Vic,

I think something of newer vintage in the 115 to 140 range would get you there. Your 85 was rated at the crankshaft, newer engines are rated at the prop.

There are some interesting deals on this web page.
