I have a 1991 Johnson 12v. trolling motor. It have two plastic gears, that make it turn, when you press the foot peddle. The round gear in the center of the shaft is busted. I bought a new gear and bearing, but I can't get the broken gear off  !I loosend the two allen screws on the lower end of the shaft, to allow it to slide up.Then I removed the allen screws from the broken gear in the head.It looks like there is a pin driven through the gear that is holding it in. What should I do now? I tried using a punch, to knock the pin out. That didn't work either. There is also some wires going through the center of the broken gear.

That pin you speak of is a split roll pin. If you used a regular punch, you were probably flaring the pin, and making it tighter. Use a flat faced punch that is only slightly smaller then the OD of the roll pin.

Is there a certian direction that the pin needs to move to come out?

I still can't get the pin out, and what about the wires?

pwilson

You have probably mushroomed both ends of the pin by now. The only suggestion that I have, is to get a drill bit that is the same size as the hole the pin is in and have at it. Use it on high speed from the get-go. It should either spin the pin out or hopefully drill right through the pin, so you can remove it little by little. Best I can offer at this point, as I cannot think of a way to close the end of the pin back up, so you can drive it out. Be cautious of the wire and you may wind up repairing them once you get the gear apart. No big deal! No certain direction the pin needs to come out! Just needs to come out! Good Luck,

I really don't think the pin is mushroomed.I have only hit it from one side, so far.It looks like it might have moved just a little. If I do decide to drill it out what should I use for another pin for the gear?

Contact trollingmotorparts.com at 1-800-364-3949 and they will have one for next to nothing. An alternative might be a hardware store that has stainless steel split pins in the size you need. I have seen them at smaller hardware stores before.

Re: Johnson trolling motor gear busted!

had a similar situation on a trolling motor last season.heres how i pulled mine.just a note though doing it this way will mean replacing the rollpin.use a bench mounted vise opened slightly more than the pins diamiter so as not to bend shaft and hit the pin with moderat umph with a hammer.when its flush with that side lift just a bit and place a thin crowbar or other storng tool between shaft and vise.tighten vise down haed on the pin and pry out. worked great for me and no damage to shaft just replaced with a 7 cent roll pin and went back to fishing. still going strong.good luck
