I have a 1984 90hp Johnson v.o.r..The trim/tilt works fine however if you hold the button for a few seconds after it has reached its max. travel either up or down, it then takes about 30 seconds of continuos button pushing before the motor starts to move again. The hydraulic pump motor is going but does not load up until about 30 secs. have elapsed. It appears as if the by pass valve is sticking for awhile, then closes off and the pump loads up and the tilt mechanism starts working again. Any help would be appreciated ..jarob New Zealand

Re: johnson trim problems

I was hopeing someone could help me with my problem as it is going to be quite an act to remove the motor off the transom to be able to get at the hydraulic valves etc. and would like to know what to look for.

The first thing I would attempt is to change the fluid and see if it corrects. Drain the system from the bypass/manual release screw by removing the snap ring and unscrewing the valve. It is located on the starboard side of the engine bracket usually in a recessed hole. Then refill with tilt/trim fluid and cycle to remove air.

Re: johnson trim problems

Thanks for the reply Kart33, I have finally tried your suggestion however the problem remains. When the up and down relays are activated do they reverse the hydraulic pump motor or does the motor stay in the same direction and the relays just change the flow to the rams either top or bottom via a solenoid operated valve thingy.

Jarob...... That problem is caused by one of two ball bearing type check valves that are located in the oil pump which is located under the electric motor. The cure is to replace the oil pump.

However, this is something one can live with. It's simply a matter of waiting approximately 60 seconds after raising or lowering the engine to its extreme/max position.
