I have a Johnson Tracker Pro Series 60hpr 6cylinder. It has been setting for about a year. Took it out this weekend and it started right up, but after about 15 to 20 min. runing it will just die and won't start back up. Then it will flood while trying to restart. After it sets about 30 to 45 min. it will start right back up. Any suggestions on what might be wrong and how to fix it.

I forgot to put the year of the motor. It is a 1993.

Hey, Dolphin. Is there a typo in your post? I suspect you meant a three cylinder, but that doesn't matter. You could be overheating. Do you have a strong telltale stream of water from the power head? If not, replace your water pump impeller and pray that the powerhead has survived without damage. That OMC 3 cyl. is one heck of a good motor.

Good luck.
JB

Thanks, J.B. I think it is a six cylinder. It has six spark plugs. (by the way I am female so who knows) anyway, it seem like it had a good stream of water, but we will be checking it out this weekend. If it has a good stream of water, could it be the coil? If it was overheating would it smell hot? It did not smell hot, all you could smell when you try to restart is gas.

Re: Johnson Tracker Pro Series

Howdy, Dolphin. Well, you're right. Six spark plugs usually means six cylinders. Maybe it's a lot more than 60hp. If you have a good telltale the cooling system probably isn't your problem. If all six cylinders go out at once it probably isn't a carb (each one feeds 2 cyl) or a power pack (I think all of the OMC 6's have two independent 3 cylinder ignition systems)so that leaves things that are common to all cylinders. Start at the fuel tank. Be sure it is well vented and not building up pressure or vacuum to frustrate the fuel pump at maintaining the proper flow of fuel. Then examine your fuel line for anything unusual. Check the fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carbs for contact with something that could heat it up and vapor-lock the pump. You can't do any harm by putting an overhaul kit in your fuel pump, though your description of the symptoms seems like too much gas, rather than too little, and connected to the engine getting fully warmed up.

That's the limit of what I know about 6 cylinder OMC engines, and it is theory, not hands-on experience. I'll bet one of our fellow boaters with lots of practical experience can zero you in a lot closer.

Good luck.
JB

Thanks, J.B. for the information. Will try it all out this weekend. At least I have something to start with, before I was just totally clueless. Thanks again!!!

J.B. you were right!!! My husband said it is a three cylinder. That what I thought was 6 spark plugs was actually 3 plugs pluded in to 3 coils. Sorry about that!!!
