So I got her started.... she started right up and ran well in test tank. One issue....... shifts into reverse no problem. In forward the linkage connected to motor just chatters and no forward movement. I was moving onto lower end next. Any ideas?

First thing is to check the shift rod coupler. Make sure both upper and lower shift rods are secure and the bolts pass through the recess in the ends of the shift rods. Forward gear pulls the shift rods up, and I've seen your problem when one of the rods is not secure in the coupler and just pulls out when you shift into forward.

Think I found issue w linkage.... even in fill forward the distance between linkage attachment and motor was keeping motor from the last 1/4"...... linkage issue.... sometimes simple is still not simple with me on these old outboards.

If it's not the linkage it could be a bad forward gear and shift dog.

If I discover upon inspection of gears and shift dog in lower unit that I would like to replace with some in better shape........ what lower units are compatible? It's a 1959 Super Seahorse 35hp.
