if you look at the shift arm that slides through the casting under the carbs,you should see a clevis type pin that goes through a hole in the arm,pull it out,then you can push the shift arm in toward the portside of the engine,it might be easier if you disconnect the cable.At that point you will be releasing the shift shaft that goes down to the gearcase ,there is a lock device that slips into the shift shaft,by pushing the shift arm over ,you are removing the protrusion type pin that is part of the arm assy.I think it will be more clear after you remove the clevis pin and push the arm over
