Hi every one I'm new to this forum but I've found a lot of useful information! I have located the silver quarter size tag on the top on the motor. It reads J3707606 I can't seem to find any information on the serial. I do know that the hood of the motor says 65 hp it's a 3 cylinder and it has the phrase "mean machine" near the lower unit on both sides. From what I can figure out its a 72 or 73 Johnson stinger 65hp but I would like to get the exact year. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You need the model number
Thats not the number......... Its not always on that plug.. I belive it is for Evinrudes ( mine is ) but may not be for Johnsons .

The number you need is the model number and should be on a plate on the ( port side usually) transom bracket

numbers for a ' 72 are 65ESLR72, 65ES72, 65ESL72

and for a ' 73 are 65ESR73, 65ESLR73, 65ES73, 65ESL73

model identification 2.jpgUsually on these older models, the factory stamps both the serial number (which is what you have given) and the model number-which is the number which tells the year-on the casting plug. As an example, see the attached pic of a 1975 engine. Any chance your plug has additional info?

Re: Johnson serial number help!!

I can tell you that serial number 3,669,313 is a 1972, and 3,859,623 is a 1973. So your number 3,707,606 is somewhere in between, making it a 1972 or 1973. But you already figured that out.

So.....Is it Hydro-Electric shift (1972) or Power-Shift (1973)?

EDIT: Deleting incorrect information.

If it has a red plug connecting the boat harness to the engine, it is a 1973 model. If it is yellow or black, it is a 1972
