Just picked up an old Johnson Seahorse. It is in need some good repairs and a paint job. Can't seem to find the serial number though. Does anyone know where the serial number plate on these engines are??

Look on top of the transom clamp or the side of the leg. Really old J's have the model number on the rope sheave on the flywheel.

Re: Johnson Seahorse

Sorry it has taken me so long but I have finnaly found some numbers. On the tiller arm I foun a number that reads 43 D12 then under the D is a J. Underneath where the gas tank mounts there is a number 300563. Under the rope seave is a number reading 102127. If anyone can make sense of these numbers I would really appreciate it. FYI the motor is greean if that helps.

Re: Johnson Seahorse

Those numbers aren't doing anything for me. Some will have a tag on the left hand side of the transom clamp (the side the tiller is on). If it's an old 2-1/2 or 5, it will be stamped into the block casting on the left, just above where the block bolts on to the leg. It will be something like a TD-XX or TN-XX if it's one of those. Does the motor have a gear shift? That would narrow it down. Or just post a pic.

Thanks. Does anyone know where I can find parts and/or exploded drawings for an outboard this old?

Go to aomci.org. On the front page, on the left, is 'Ask-A-Member'. Those guys can help you on specific questions (PLEASE don't ask them what it's worth- that's a big no-no). There may be a very few reproduction parts available, but I doubt it. I have several pre-war motors, and you have to search for parts on sites like aomci, at swap meets, and there are people who specialize in those parts. I've had excellent luck with Doug Penn, who has a link on the aomci site.

To post pics, you'll have to reduce the size, either with your own photo software, or run it through a site like photobucket.
