I bought a boat with this motor. I'm new to all of this! I don't know the year or anything about it. The #'s I got off of it were; Model #J50BECNR
Serial #J5666550
Any help or comments would be appreciated! Like does it need a pressureized tank? Does it have an altenator? The basics! I guess!

Re: Johnson Seahorse 50HP

You have a 1982 Johnson 50HP motor. This link will help you to understand the model number:

You do not use a pressurized tank; the motor has a fuel pump, so you just need a single hose with a primer bulb and a good generic tank with a OMC/BRP fitting.

Fuel to oil is 50:1 mix. BRP recommends 89 US Octane. Always use TCW-3 oil: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm

If it has an alternator, it will look like this: http/www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/?cart_id=020552124&gd_grid_id=63&gd_poid=109228&gd_row=46&keywords=rectifier&session_id=362142099

Re: Johnson Seahorse 50HP

Thank you very much! Now I'm getting somewhere. Are these known to be good motors?

Re: Johnson Seahorse 50HP

There are no good motors, only good owners. A good owner will track down a factory, model-specific service manual and the motor will outlive them.

To see how well the previous owner did, get a screw in compression guage and do a compression test.

There is a list of Engine FAQ here:
http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=31&page=1&pp=50&sort=lastpost&order=desc&daysprune=-1

You will want to select from "beginning" in the pick list at the bottom of that page. Find the decarb article and you can do that once a year to start.
