I have a Johnson seahorse 18 model fd-12.
I started it today after rebuilding the tank,
and at first water was coming out.
After about 5 min of off and on running No more water. I was wondering what is the problem and how to fix it.

Thanks,

Ten,

More than likely your impeller (water pump) is gone.

If you've never changed one before, I wouldn't do it without a manual.

You can order one on this site.

Sounds like a lot of money for 5 pages but your getting (in the typical Seloc manual all E/J motors
to 40hp 1956-1970. ebay list all kinds of manuals
I have 2 that totaled about 20 dollars and cover
almost every make motor 1960-72 Ill admit they lack some detail but they have served me well.
Manuals are available at NAPA auto parts,amazon.com,ebay I like the Seloc manual
because it gives you some hot tips to help you stay out of trouble.

If you are going to do any maintenance on your engine yourself, you need a complete manual.

This advice is stated on this board over and over by all the experienced members - buy a manual before messing with an engine.

I like the Clymer Manuals, which are available at any boat store. But, the Seloc or the manufacturer's manuals are also fine.

The $25-$30 or so will seem cheap compared to making mistakes and other frustrations. You may want to only change an impellor this week, but you will need the other sections sooner or later.

Squirting water????

They don't have a "pee hole"

What should be normal is..........

A very minute amount of wet spray out the exhaust bypass hole at idle cold. As the thermostat opens (after a minute or more depending on water temp) the water in the exhaust spray will become more pronounced. The exhaust sound may also become more muffled as more water is expelled. If the motor is allowed to cool down the same symptoms will be observed. Also if the thermostat is a little sticky it might be a more pronounced Off/On situation.

The water pump impeller is located on the driveshaft just above the internal gears of the lower unit which can be serviced by simply..

First remove the small somewhat oval shaped cover on the side of the leg and remove the lower of the two shift rod connector bolts. Then remove all the bolts connecting the lower unit to the leg section that are located around the anticavitation plate area.

Hi 307,

This may be a reach but I have been testing a motor before and let the water level in my barrel drop below the water intakes on the lower unit. Upon restarting the engine, no water appeard in the exhaust or pee hole. By the way, telltale water is the first thing I look for when my engine cranks ;)

You did not say whether you were using muffs, a tank, or in the lake, but I thought I would throw this out there just in case.

Blaze,
The 1958 Johnson 18hp didn't have a t-stat. The motor should pump a healthy gush out the exhaust relief within 30 seconds of motor startup. If you're getting nothing more than a light mist out yours, you may want to check for obstructions or other water pump issues...
- Scott
