Hello I am new to the forum have read it a lot for some good advice, but just recently registered. I have a 1976 25hp johnson seahorse model #25r76e. I got a pretty good deal on it only paid 300 for it. It didn't run when I got it but had good compression and looked to be in decent shape besides the not running. Well I cleaned the carb still didn't run no spark so I pulled the fly wheel and filed the points which got it running like a champ. After I got it running I went a head and replaced the old impeller figured it was a good idea since I had no idea when how old it was. So I don't have much in the motor around $20 for a impeller and couple of extra shear pins. So I have been using it for a few months now and it began to jump out then back into gear like I hit a stump or log. Upon searching on here found out it was likely the clutch dog and forward gear. So I take my lower unit apart the cluch dog and forward gear worn a little but not badly I don't use reverse much except getting off the trailer. Rather than spending an arm and leg on the little gear and cluctch dog both together off marineengine.com are in the 450 range I just used some bailing wire to hold the shifer in the forward position. Although a red neck repair it did work a for about the past month and a half until this last weekend it started popping out of gear again. So my question is this is the engine worth the 450 or so for the new parts or can anyone on here help me with getting them for cheaper or possibly have a good lower unit they could sell me? Reply or pm any help in getting these parts for less would be much appreciated. I just can't believe the price of the parts I don't want to spend that much on a engine that when working well is barely worth the price of them. Sorry for the long post just wanted to get all the details in.
