I am looking to buy at what I am being told is a 1995 Evinrude 125 HP motor. The motor has been repainted white and rebadged as a JOHNSON 115. This was done (I am told) as a way to be under their lakes HP restriction.

I have done a TON of research on the WWW and have not been able to reconcile what appears on ID websites and what the seller proports the motor to be... I have cross referenced the metal OMC ID tag info against several sites info and cannot place the model number EXCEPT for the "EO" part indicating 1995...

Q#1: Did OMC make a 125 (ever?) or 1995???

Q#@2 The powerhead still has the original 'Rude champange green paint color, was this used in 1995, or had they moved to the dark blue or white colors scheme?

Q#3 The controller is a push-button SELECTRIC style one. Was this a 1995 unit, or is it as I think a much older style?

Q#4 Was tilt and trim standard in 1995, or an option. This motor has the gas assist manual tilt parts.

Q#5 how hard is it to add tilt/trim to this if I decide to do it later?

The engine seems to run GREAT, and was demonstrated to have high compression uopn testing: 125-130 on all 4 cylinders. The powerhead paint and condition leads me to believe that it has NOT required rebuilding, and therefore is in good to excellent condition internally...

I know it seems like ALOT TO ASK, but its a $2,000.00 purchase and I'm trying to get decent value...

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR INPUT!

Yes indeed, there is a 95' 125hp. V4 Looper.

If you would post the model number you found, maybe we can help with the engines (or block) ID.

Look on the port transom bracket for the model number tag. You may also find the model number on a large welch plug on the block.

OBJ,

WOW what a fast response!

OK, I'll post the information found on the tag. I feel the seller is honest, but caveat emptor is my motto.

Its a flat aluminum tag with OMC information in black silk screen. The tag is about 1 inch by 1.5 inches...

It has two lines of info stamped into the metal:

Top line: 125183

Bottom line EO 0442

This is as accurate as I can remember. I DID write it down, but sadly the paper has been misplaced. Thanks!

The model number (125183) indicates a 125hp. Year is 1971.

This has electric shift. Could it be the seller was referring to the boat as a 95'?

The last electric shifts were made around 72'.

Someone else posted here a couple weeks ago about a motor like that. It was on ebay. It was repainted white with I think a American flag decal on the cover. Is this the same motor?

Re: Johnson 'rude ID. questions

....Well yes, this is ONE of the motors on Ebay, maybe not that exact one, but it has been repainted. Can't say for sure as to the americab flag... Did however get a bunch of digital photos for my review. Plate on the cowl says 115 and sticker says VRO although the oil injection has been disabled, seller says those oil injection units were junk and to go with pre-mix (which I can live with)

I'm thinking this motor is an amalgamation of parts. Does that sound accurate to anyone alse out there. If it is a "FRANKENMOTOR" should I run away from the sale? It seemed to be a tight motor...

The powerhead paint color and the selectric shifter setup shouts 1971 to me, not 1995...

I am THIS close to bagging the whole thing.

Whoa!!!! I think I'd run away from this one. If it's got selectric shift, it ain't got no VRO. VRO's didn't come about till 84'. "FRANKENMOTOR"? Maybe. The seller most likely don't know what he really has or is trying to just get rid of it......Just my opinion.

OBJ,

Sadly I looked up the model number on WWW.MAXRULES.COM withtheir model ID charts , and yes, it looks very much it is indeed a 1971.

Even still, its got 125-130 compression and is VERY clean. Give me you e-mail and I'll send a picture... A picture is worth a thousand words even if that picture says "RUN!!!"

Re: Johnson 'rude ID. questions

...the "buy it now" was $1,800.00 and I negotiated in person to $1,700.00

Still a 1995 motor would have (theroetically) less use than a motor from 1971...

Too bad, but glad I know.
