Hey guys, new to the board wanted to say hi and had a few ?'s

I recently inherited a 1994 stratos 270 fs with a johnson 150 fast strike on it. It has been a couple of years since the boat has been ran and even then it was not running right. I know there is a problem with one of the carbs something such as missing screws in it or something similar.

My question is, starting to get it in working condition, what do i need to focus on?

I am replacing the water pump on saturday via the dealer as well as new spark plugs. They quoted me $100 installed on the H20 pump.

They quoted me prices on a new fuel pump which is $470 installed.... Do you think i can rebuild the one i have or does it need to be replaced, and if so how hard is it to rebuild it or replace it myself? I am no full time mechanic but i can work my way around a garage unless it is just something better left for the dealer.

Same goes for carbs, i know one is possibly missing some screws, could i just clean and rebuild these or should i let the shop do this? They quoted me up to $350 depending on how much work they needed.

I have read the awake a sleeping outboard post but i wanted some first hand answers to my specific problems if no one minded....

If you guys had any advice here i would really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance...

Those prices aren't bad but we do our own work here.
Get the factory service manual before tinkering, its ez to ruin an engine if you do something wrong.
Carbs are simple to do, it takes more time to get them off than rebuild them.

To me you have to decide if you plan to use the boat or work on the boat. During the winter when you aren't using the boat, you can rebuild things. In the summer, let the mechanic do it. Carb rebuild is too technical for a beginner. Water pump is no too hard. Get your shop manual and parts manual. Preferably the manufacture's manuals.

If the engine has set that long, the fuel manifold most likely needs cleaning and float and needle checked. I would also rebuild the bleed pump as these cause a lot of low end troubles and have all the carbs gone thru before putting in service.
