I have a 1988 Johnson 120hp and I ordered a new rectifier a few days ago and I just read a thread which mentioned it could use a 10 amp or optional 35 amp rectifier on my motor. I ordered the 10 amp here on Iboats(CDI part #193-4205) how do I know if I need the 35 amp.

Re: Johnson Rectifier Question

You would need the 35 amp rectifier if the engine were fitted with the optional 35 amp alternator kit. ( includes a 35 amp stator coil, different flywheel and different crankcase head and bearing assembly ... and costs over $800)
No point in fitting it with the standard 10amp stator.

How can I tell which I have?

Re: Johnson Rectifier Question

Pull the flywheel and look for a part number on the stator.

Standard stator is 0583410. Standard flywheel is 0583428

35amp stator is 0583561. Flywheel is 0583510

Re: Johnson Rectifier Question

Very few 1988 120HP or 140HP motors were sold with 35 amp systems. If your flywheel looks like the one in the parts catalog ignition diagram, you have ordered the correct rectifier. http://shop.evinrude.com/

The 35 amp flywheel is vented at the top and is a much different looking part.
