not sure what side of replacement sierra seal should face prop. The steel side has an air space. Is that space for gear oil to lube spring or is the seal completely sealed

To blazes with Sierra. If you want good seals that match original factory seals, then go to vintageoutboard.com. The seal kits they sell are the best. You can't buy a seal anywhere else that comes close to what they sell. Once you get their seals, the way they go in, will no longer be a question. It'll be self explainatory.

Your new seal in the picture looks like an upper gearcase seal, not a prop seal.

It is a prop shaft seal for a 1960 Johnson 18hp model FD-14 and still not sure what way it goes

On most of the prop shaft seals that use 2 seals, the inner seal seals the oil inside the gearcase with the lips pointing IN, the outer seal is reversed sealing the water out with it's lips pointing OUT.

The seal in the picture is a 2 way seal. The seal kit came with 2 prop seals but there is only room for one. Not sure what way to install.

Re: Johnson prop shaft seal

thanks for your replys. I already bought the sierra seal kit from the dealer. the seal in the picture in my post is the only one that fits the prop shaft (kit no 18-2684) if i put the steel side out and fishing line gets in between the seal and steel it could cause problems and if i install it the other way maybe not so strong Any thoughts

thanks
