Johnson Outboard Question

My 1996 Johnson 112 SPL sat sheltered for (6)weeks and was running fine when last used.
First time out a few weeks ago, it was hard to start and would only run for more than a minute or two at a time. I checked the fuel filter, changed the plugs, and it started right up and ran about a minute, then stalled. When I checked for spark at the plugs I found none. Any ideas what could cause this ? What generates the spark on an outboard ? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Johnson Outboard Question

Double check for spark on all 4 first. If you're sure all 4 have no spark, check your emergency shut off switch and then the key switch kill circuit.

Spark is first generated by the flywheel magnets passing by the stator coil windings.

Good luck!

Re: Johnson Outboard Question

Thanks for the reply. I have rechecked all plugs and have a very faint spark on all four. I have had problems with emergency kill switch and had first thought that was the problem. Is there a way to by pass the emergency kill switch ? I am concerned it may not be making a good solid circuit causing the spark problem. The kill switch has always been a problem with it's design. The clip would never stay secure and has many times fell off while operating the boat. There have been a few times when I noticed the clip had fell off and the engine had continued to run. I just want to test the circuit if possible.

Re: Johnson Outboard Question

If you have spark then it's neither of the kill circuits. It should be of some concern that the motor continues to run with clip pulled.

As for your origional problem of hard starting and stalling I would look at other things like carbs. Especially if it was OK then wasn't after it sat. Also make sure you aren't trying to use the fuel that's 6 weeks old. Remember --FRESH 87 octane only and Champion plugs.

Good luck!
