24:1 with 87 octane gas and TC-W3 rated outboard oil. Forget about SAE 30W if it's printed anywhere on the engine, that was good 40 years ago.<br /><br />A little more info:<br />Spark plugs - Champion J6C (replacing the old J6J) gapped at .030"<br />Lower unit lube - OMC/BRP "HiVis" or equivalent 90 weight outboard gearcase lube.<br /><br />Great little engine those 3hps!

I stand by my recommendation. The 3hp has plain bearings on both ends of the con-rods, all three main bearings, it has no proper seals but rather relys on oil slingers. All these things need the extra oil, as evidenced by the bountiful supply of 3hp engines '52-'63 (24:1 original ratio) and the lack of surviving '64-'68 3hp engines (50:1 original ratio).
