I have just bought my first boat. Its a 16' with a Johnson Super Seahorse Electramatic 80hp. No V4AL18C.
I beleive the boat is about an 86 model an am assuming the motor is a similar age. Now my question. Is anyone familiar with this motor? any problems I should look out for?
It has been run but not used in water for about 6 months. The previous owner says it was running just fine. Do you reccomend me check/change anything before I use it myself.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Johnson outboard help

Hey Muz, according to my records, your engine is about 20 years older than the boat.
V4A-18 80 1966
The first being the model number, then the HP, and then the year.
Also, you can see it here. Your engine
As far as doing anything, to be on the safe side I would change the impeller on it for sure and not knowing whether it had any thing done to it prior to storage, I would at the least get me some gas stabilizer and put in it.
If it did not have the gas removed from the engine, you might have some gummed up carbs.
Hard to answer your question not knowing what the previous owner had done to it. But do change the impeller to be on the safe side there.

P.S. Muz, also drain and refill the lower unit while you are changing the impeller.

Re: Johnson outboard help

When changing the LowerUnit lube, confirm that the oil has no water or metal chunks in it.
Replace the seals (washers or "O"Rings) on the drain plugs.

If there is water in LU lube, first just replace lube and and drain plug seals. Check L/U again after running in water for a while. If there is no water at this check, the water was probably due to drain plug seals. If there is still water at this check, you ought to consider replacing all of the seals in the lower unit.

You might consider purchasing a service manual for you motor. They are critical to have when performing service on your motor. You can probably get one her at iboats (at the bottom of this page).

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

P.S. I Love these old motors!

Re: Johnson outboard help

Hi, Muz.

When you change the gearcase oil, DO NOT use standard outboard gearcase oil.

OMC specified a special oil for the Electra-Matics. Get it at your JohnnyRude dealer.

Good luck. :)
