Hey all, new here to the forum...been working on my boat for awhile now, decided to swap the motor out, couldnt get the old one to run rite, so heres the question, I am taking off a 1976 75 horse johnson stinger, with mechanical shift, going to put a 1971 60 horse johnson with electric shift, but before i do, i had started it to make sure it ran, well its stuck in forward, now i tested the power going to the wires and and I think they are correct, forward there is no power, neutral there is power to one wire, and reverse there is power to both wires, so i was digging a little more and decided to check the fluid level in the lower unit, yep bone dry, so i look for cracks in it, sure enough front part of lower unit is cracked, looks like someone forgot to drain it before winter last year...before i took posession of it, now is it possible to use the lower unit off of the manual shift one and use the guts out of the electric shift one? Is there any way i can take the two motors and make a good motor out of the two? the 75 horse ran good on the ears, but as soon as i put it in the water it ran good idling, but as soon as i wanted to take off with it it would die, had to let it warm up every time i started it, no matter if i had just shut her down or not, replaced the fuel pump in it and all, so i then i tore it down to look for a scored cylinder, and didnt look like any of them were bad either, did a compression test on it before i tore it down too and they were all 150+ so i am just frustrated with it and was hoping for a quick swap, got the 60 horse with a boat for nothing so i have the controls and all, just its on a trihull and they are not a good boat up here on lake of the wood, the baot i am trying to get working is a 1976 17ft silverline, sorry for the long first post, but tried to get it all in one post and many...thanks in advance...Bob

Sorry, but you are not going to be able to swap the parts around like you were trying to do, two completely different lower units.
Did you check spark on your old engine before you tore it down, were the carbs clean and did you have fresh fuel in it?

yeah i checked spark, it was good, fuel was new, i ran it the whole summer that way, just very annoying when i wanted to go so thats why i figured id look into it...the only thing that was mentioned to me that coulda been wrong was the seal on the crank might of been wore or tore or something the said to cause the problem with it, havent checked into that yet either though...prob just get a overhaul kit for it and rebuild it of the older 60 horse wont work...Bob
