i JUST PURCHASED A USED 1972 ( I THINK IT MAY BE A 1969 ) 55 HP OUTBOARD THAT RUNS GREAT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT WILL NOT REMAIN IN NEUTRAL - WHEN IT STARTS, THE PROP IS TURNING. WE HOT WIRED THE SOLINOIDS TO NO AVAIL. i FORGOT TO MENTION, THIS IS A HYDRO ELECTRIC SHIFT. I HAVE DISASSEMBLED THE GEARCASE AND WAS SURE I WOULD FIND A BROKEN SPRING THAT WAS NOT KEEPING IT IN NEUTRAL BUT EVERYTING WAS IN GREAT SHAPE WITH VERY LITTLE WEAR SHOWING. I AM PUZZLED BY MY FINDINGS AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP AT ALL ON THIS SUBJECT. TIA TERRY

hey doc
I own a 1969 55 horse hyd.elec. shift and had the same problem.I'm not trying to insult you but from my own mistake i found that lower unit oil level is crucial on these gems.on the end of the shaft which is activated by the solenoids in the lower unit there is a small plunger which opens and closes the oil ports for neutral and reverse. When i had my unit apart (for the 2nd time in one day) I found that the plunger had popped out of the plastic that holds it and was not opening and closing right. If this has happened to you upon removal of the shaft the spring and the plunger will remain down inside.just remove it and snap it back in to the plastic retainer then reinstall carefully.Worst case is that pump is bad or solenoids are faulty but forward usually will not fail.80w90 is to heavy of an oil for these pumps also.dealers sell a 10wieght.
good luck dw

hi ds, you might want to check your blocking diode b4 you tear into your engine too far. the diode is located in your throttle control box behind the shift switch. what it does is keeps power to the lower unit while your engine is shutting down to keep it in neutral because there are only fwd and rev solenoids in your lower unit. i forget how many ohms it is supposed to carry but you can get that information in your service manual if you have one. if not e-mail me at EDIT sorry Brad, email not allowed. use the private message system. TD and i can get the info for you. good luck

Re: JOHNSON O/B 55HP / HYDRO ELECTRIC SHIFT

if you have a 55 hp it is 1969, 1972 was a 50 hp.

Hydro Electric Shift)
(J. Reeves)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Premium Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).
With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

Hopefully, doctorsign has found the trouble within the 8+ years since he asked the question.
