Just purchased a used Johnson OB with Model # J130TLCNM and Serial #J5699966. The cowling says 150HP and the ID plate also says 150 but the model number crosses to 130HP. Which is right?? Any other information about the engine would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Johnson Motor ID

The model number of J130TLCNM indicates that the engine is a 1982 130hp Johnson, however OMC (Johnson) did not manufactuer a 130hp engine in 1982.

Where did you get that model number from?

Re: Johnson Motor ID

Hi Joe,
Model number came from a small plate off of the mounting bracket which had both model number and serial number stamped into it. Looked like the original OMC tag. I too was confused because the tag also said 150HP but the model number translated to 130. I thought it might have to do with how the HP was measured,at the prop vs the lower unit. I had been told that prior to 83, there was some difference in the way manufacturers measured and reported HP ratings. i assumed that this may account for this difference?

Thanks for the reply and any thoughts you may have on this.

Re: Johnson Motor ID

Oops-- Sorry Joe. I read the numbers off of that plate when I got home with the motor late last PM. It was by light of flashlight and I looked again this AM and the 3 was actuall a 5. the old eyes aren't what they used to be.

Any thought about this engine? It cam off a deck boat and its entire life was freshwater. Seems to be in good condition. Am installing on a 19 foot SeaNymph CC and need to get the floor in and CC re-installed before I set it up. Have engine and PTT installed and am anxious to get it on the water.

Thanks again and sorry for the mistake.
