johnson motor cranks fine but wont fire?

its a 75 horse johnson super seahorse. Its on a 65 Dorsett Daytona, the guy i bought it from lost t he key and tried to hotwire but battery was dead. they got home re wired the switch and it would just crank. i tried to re wire but the only thing it fixed was the run part was cranking all the time when on run now it only cranks on run when you turn it. Could the switch still be wrong or could it be something else?

your ign has a kill switch in it. you'll need a schematic to see how to bypass,but you need to get power back to control unit to get spark. have you checked for spark? kick switch shuts down running engine,doesn't effect starter operation

yeah we did there was no spark, so that could be the kill switch then?
