Just curious.

Johnson has since pared down the selections, but in 2001 they made a 10, 15, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, ...... Why so many? What were they thinking?

Re: Johnson Models

I'm surely no expert but I would bet they can cover all those models with 3 basic powerheads.
So they can present a pretty big lineup with minimal investment.

Re: Johnson Models

There are so many different boats with so many different maximum horsepower ratings that they try to cover as many of them as they can. That helps assure that one of their motors will be hanging on the back.

For instance, my 1970s boat is rated for 100Hp. At the time, Chrysler had comparatively few different models. The closest was 105Hp, so I wouldn't have been able to get that motor with my boat. Mercury offered a 90 and 115 Hp. That kinda screwed Merc for this deal. Evinrude offered a 100, so that's what it got. That same basic design was rated at 85, 90, 100, 110, 115, 125, 135, and 140. That covers a lot of boat max Hps.
