Bought rebuilt `92 40HP Johnson in January....couldn`t use until now....cranked it up every other week....ran it yesterday in lake for about 2 hours and lower unit started making noise...brought home and removed lower unit drain plug....no oil or water, just a little grey grease with metal shavings on it. Was told to rinse out with mineral spirits and fill with Hybrid oil and this might help. Dealership that rebuilt it no longer in business....any advice from anyone out there?

rinse as suggested, then fill with 80-90 outboard lower unit oil. then keep track of it. also when you do it replace the seals on the drain and fill screws, everytime they are removed. you may have gotten lucky, only time will tell.

sounds like when they did the rebuild they forgot to fill it. If they pre greased it and it sounds like they did then you might have gotten lucky as TD says only time will tell.
